In May of 2012, we started a group for LDS LGBT/SSA members of the Church and their and families (read more about that group here). After so many wonderful experiences in that group, there was a desire to reach out on a broader scale in our local area and we set to work on hosting a conference for LGBT/SSA Mormons and their families, the ALL Are Alike Unto God conference, held on April 27, 2013. We are now hosting a second annual conference.
Included below are some quick description points about the ALL Conferences.
What is the ALL Conference?
This is an opportunity to reach out in a spirit of kindness and love to our brothers and sisters in the Church who are attracted to the same sex (SSA), or who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Our hope is that there will be a powerful spirit of love at these conferences and that many who have felt estranged or distant from their faith and our LDS community will feel a rekindling of hope for holding on to the Church in their lives. We hope these conferences will continue to bring healing to individual members in our local area and to the many families that attended the conferences with them.
What is the purpose of the ALL Conference?
The goal we have had in our efforts has been to reach out to let people know they are not alone, that there is a place for them, and to set a tone in our approach to homosexuality where there is love and compassion. Through conference messages and programming, we hope to provide a framework wherein we can engage with each other on these complex issues in a Christ like way that supports our faith and beliefs and shows love to those that experience same gender attraction, or who identify as LGBT.
This conference provides an opportunity for people to openly share their thoughts and feelings. We work to ensure there is a sensitive tone in all these conversations, fostering a dialogue respectful of both the different personal feelings shared and also towards the Church, in a spirit of supporting more understanding for all of us connected by these complex issues.
How does ALL relate to the LDS Church website, Mormons and Gays?
After setting our goals for the original ALL conference, we were pleased to see the development and release of the new Church website, mormonsandgays.org, which very much echoes the approach we have had to our conferences. We hope we have contributed to the conversation started on this website in a way that would please the Lord in reaching out to God’s children facing these issues.
